Memorial created at the former Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. The unit is under the direct authority of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. On its premises, there is a permanent main exhibition and several so-called national exhibitions. Temporary exhibitions are also organised periodically. The key function of the museum is to preserve the buildings and grounds, to pay tribute to the victims of Nazi terror, to preserve the memory of the tragic events of the site and to call for action to prevent similar events from occurring in the future.
